Gorillaz – Plastic Beach Review

“Data from PlasticsEurope, a notable pan-European trade association, states that, from 1950 to 2010, plastic production grew from a comparatively measly 1.5 million tonnes to an estimated 275 million tonnes. Now this is not a baseless increase – plastics are utilised the world over, and for good reason. The impetus of their ubiquity lies in high applicability and usefulness. Plastics are durable, lightweight and long lasting (plastics can persevere “anywhere from 50 to 1000 years!”). Their widespread use has brought convenience to the world; however, this is the double-edged sword of our polymeric plight. Since the ocean is “downstream from nearly every terrestrial location”, it has become the receiving body for much of our waste. Illegal dumping, littering and improper disposal are rife; nature suffers for it.
